Send Father's Day Greetings June 19th..
The first known celebration of Father's Day was on July 5, 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia, where it was commemorated at William Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South – now known as Central United Methodist Church. Grace Golden Clayton is believed to have suggested it to her pastor after a deadly explosion in nearby Monongah in December, killing 361 men.

It was also during a sermon in 1909 that Sonora Smart Dodd became inspired by Mother's Day. After the death of her mother, Sonora and her siblings were raised by their father William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran. Sonora wanted to show how thankful she was to her father and, because William was born in June, she worked to have the first Father's Day celebrated on June 19, 1910.
In 1924, President Coolidge recommended that Father's Day become a national holiday. President Johnson designated the third Sunday of June to be Father's Day in 1966. It was not until 1972 that President Nixon instituted Father's Day as a national observance.

What a neat way to keep in touch with family and friends. We are creating a quick and easy way of sending cards for any occasion. Sending a QuickNote ecard is a great way to save time in having to run to the store to get a card for that special occasion. Halloween is for Kids

Halloween’s official date is October 31, which is a Saturday this year. Of course kids will be out trick or treating on any night sanctioned by their community. It is a secular holiday with creative credits given to the Irish and the pagans.

Halloween is the second biggest retail holiday of the year next to Christmas. Everyone I know, kid or grown-up loves Halloween. There are no expectations to be good and giving. In fact, the more treats you can manage to acquire, the more tricks you can accomplish, these are the measures of the fun you are scoring on this night! Costumes are essential, scary and gross are ok. You get to pretend to be something you are not when you are wearing a mask and a costume.

Pumpkins, witches, haunted houses, bats, ghosts, candy corn, brooms, black cats and many additional details are our design elements for creating our Halloween ecards. We have the best time of the year creating these storyboards and animations. Adding scary music and creepy sounds adds to our delight! Jennifer Sosik 2009 Surtex Show

I have returned from the 2009 Surtex Show at Jacob Javitz Center in New York City with fresh ideas and influences swimming through my conscience. Among the usual homages to Christmas and other holidays, I noticed what seemed to be a fairly consistent flashback to the art deco and hippie era. I noticed many booths with representations of retro patterns with that peculiar sense of shape and color. There were also owls depicted with the use of quirky shapes, the subject matter and design style both being a flashback to a previous era. I was particularly attracted to a drawing of flowers in a row, which utilized retro shapes for the flower heads or buds. What a fun feeling these evoked! Their simplicity of form betrayed the quality and depth of attention to design and allowed the viewer to be invited in and enjoy the playful patterns. Another trend that infused the Surtex Show this year was the representation of fashion in its many forms.

Most notable were images of fashionable women’s’ shoes, typically a high heeled, eveningwear style. As I studied the booths, it was also fun to absorb the differences in application style from one artist to the next. There were more painterly renditions to pieces that had a fuzzy, childlike feel to very digitally composed works. My work fits into this puzzle being painterly in application, yet up to date with the current market in its subject matter. This approach provides a unique and genuine venue for application in the marketing world. Let’s see where my paintbrush and the new influences from Surtexand the market take me next!

My painting seems to follow my special intuition for predicting fashion and style trends. I am fortunate to somehow stay ahead of the curve in the ever-evolving world of design in all things for the home and beauty. I do stay up on what’s popular, as my eyes are always wide open and soaking in the colors, textures, genres, and shapes of what’s currently on prominent displays in storefronts and television.Like many women - of course I love to shop - even if it’s just for the latest bargain in tough times! The great part is that while perusing the stores I can also begin to make the connection between my observations and what these current trends will evolve into in the coming year. There are little hints or cues that may be the next idea in its infancy. I think these little things that I notice - a new curve on the edge of a jacket, an unusual collar, a print that reflects something from a culture rarely expressed in the market - these all jump into my subconscious as I am trying to find those few perfect bargains that will just make my day. These ideas then resurface through brush and paint as I work in my studio at home in my process of discovery and expression of style in our market today

Happy Valentine's Day Art

Valentine’s Day – what an enjoyable aftermath to all that winter holiday excitement. Its far enough away from Christmas and New Years to let you recuperate, but close enough to sort of play off the festive spirit. Ya just gotta have another occasion to celebrate – right?! According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentine) – “The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th-century America was a harbinger of the future commercialization of holidays in the United States.[2] Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.[3]”
All of this being said, I spend an important portion of my year on Valentine oriented design to appeal to the mass market and to make for fun, inviting cards and decorative elements for the holiday of Amore. I love utilizing great loose curves and swirls in many of my designs regardless of the occasion or theme, and this practice lends itself especially well to my Valentine pieces. Traditional, lacy hearts adorned with Victorian cupids may certainly be appropriate for this holiday of lovers, but my work expresses a modern twist on an old idea by incorporating the latest style trends. Injecting fun and whimsy into any Valentine’s celebration can make for a more adventurous day!
